Grade Level: 2nd

TN State Standard: 2.RL.KID.3

Skill: We can tell how characters respond to events.

When I was a public elementary school librarian, I used this book to help reach the Tennessee State Education Second Grade Standard of telling how characters respond to events. This is a goal in the Tennessee second grade objectives. This is particular product is a homeschool unit I created a few years ago when I was working for a homeschool curriculum company. The unit is designed with activities around the book “A Bad Case of Stripes” over a one week period. The activities are worksheet-free! Some do involve writing, but those activities can also be made into shared writing and oral activities.

Telling how characters respond to events is a great way to aid in reading comprehension. It also involves the topic of cause and effect. Although originally designed for second graders, this unit could be used across various elementary grades.

Materials:

* Book- “A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon

* Index cards

* Colored pencils or crayons

* sidewalk chalk
