Overview: In this 8-page unit, we will be making text to self connections to a story while also integrating some research skills to learn more about penguins! We will be reading “One cool friend” by Toni Buzzeo.

Tip: It is not necessary to complete Every activity in the unit. Optional activities will be noted. PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOUR CHILD!

I personally have loved penguins as a small child, so when I learned about this book I wanted to read it. My daughter also loves penguins. It is such a fun story, and provides an excellent model for researching.

Outline:
Build Interest: discussion questions with a YouTube video of the book
Read: one book, YouTube video of online reading, and discussion questions
Watch: one YouTube video with discussion questions
Field Trips: two field trip ideas with optional virtual field trips (2 Youtube videos); also includes discussion questions
Research: two YouTube videos and a list of book recommendations
Fun With Food: optional activities for incorporating food with the lesson
Research and Writing: Research assignment, 2 YouTube videos, link to biography report download on Flock
Extension: two movie recommendations, a link to an article, and a writing activity idea
Let’s Recap: discussion questions and a glossary
